Adobe Acrobat has a feature which enabled the automatic opening of PDFs that you download from the internet, even if it's not your default PDF opener. For many people this is very inconvenient, but is easy to disable
Open Adobe Acrobat Reader and go to Menu (top left) --> Preferences --> General
Note - If you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader with the Old Menu Layout, this will be found in Edit --> Preferences --> General
Untick the box 'Always open PDFs saved from the web'

Scroll down slightly and click OK to save the change. If you close Adobe Acrobat and re-open it, this box should stay unticked. You are then free to download PDFs from the internet without it opening automatically in Acrobat
