How to scan a QR Code

Modified on Tue, 28 Jun, 2022 at 1:21 PM

A QR code is an easy way to share a link to online resources.  It looks a bit like a square barcode and works in a similar way but doesn't need special equipment as it can be scanned by the camera on a mobile phone or tablet.

There are a couple of ways to scan a QR code depending on the age of your device.

Option 1

Open the camera app on your device and point it at the QR code.

If your camera app is able to scan the code, a link will appear on the screen, usually below the code.

Tap the link to open the item (usually a web page) that it is directing you to.

Option 2

If you have pointed your camera at the QR code and nothing has happened, you will need to download a QR code reader to your device.

Open the Google Play Store app or App Store on your device and search for "qr code reader"

Select the app below:

Tap the "Install" button

When it has finished installing tap the "Open" button

The first time you open the app you will be asked about permissions.

Select the option "While using the app"

Tap OK on the screen below:

Tap on the "Continue" button

Point the camera at the QR code and position it within the square on the screen:

When the app has scanned the code, you will see a screen like the one below:

Tap to open browser and you will be directed to the resource that the code is linked to.

If neither of the options described above work, please contact IT Support and the team will be happy to help.
